I thought that this would be one of the better shows in this season that’s, well, lacking in shows that I’m interested in. A book with powers? Demons? A main character that, from the promotional images, looks really good? Great! Then I saw the first 2 episodes…and realized that this is a slow slice of life series that’s going to bore me to death.
First of all, the technical aspects are decent. The graphics look quite good, but definitely not worthy of being called excellent. The designs for the yokai are, frankly, boring and ugly. Giant head? 1 eye? Shaggy hair? Masks? Been there, done that. The animation is pretty rough, anyone can see that the studio skimped out on most scenes and over the course of 2 episodes there was only 2 scenes where I thought the animation was really good. The music is fitting for a series like this, but not to my tastes.
The story? Well, I’m a bit biased against slice of life stories (the only true slice of life that I really liked was Aria, and even for that series the anime was too slow for me), but this felt like a CCS that has less energy and style with a bit of the supernatural feeling from Mushishi. I mean, a demon almost kills you, but instead or ordering her to stop with your powers and your book (which seems to me like the safest and most logical option), you instead release her from her bond with you dead grandmother and hope that she dosen’t try to kill you again with nothing to stop her. And then you decide to risk your life and release every demon in the book for your grandmother even though you know pratically nothing about her. Right.
Overall? Didn’t impress me at all. I’m not going to keep watching this, though people who likes slice of life stories with a decent budget might like this series

Noooooeeessss! This is a great show! I’ll admit that the animation’s just okay, but when you watch it in HD or 1280×1024, it looks much better. I can’t believe that this is anything like CCS. I haven’t seen the show in around 7 years, but still, just because it involves returning something to a monster/demon/whatever doesn’t mean it should be compared to a mahou shoujo.
The whole reason why the demon was angry and wouldn’t try to kill Natsume after she got her name back was explained through the flashback with Reiko, which made the demon seem more pitiable than anything else. But I will admit that I’m not sure how Natsume’s feelings that “loneliness is bad” connects to “must return all the names”.
Do feel you’re being kinfd of harsh on the show, but that’s just me, and I’m already liking it so far. It also has Madara, who’s the best character so far; he’s already tried to eat/hurt Natsume around 3 times
With this I couldn’t quite put my finger on why I liked it, but I did.
I usually am not one for slice of life shows, but maybe its the supernatural element here that makes me like this one.
Choux you’re a writing demon!!!!!
LOL
I’ll have to agree with omisyth and Sakura and say I love this show. Every episode is beautiful in it’s own way, and the music sort of enhances the enjoyment of watching. Everytime the flashbacks come on though, it makes me feel like crying
I agree with you on the designs of the yokai *yaaaawn*
