If I close my eyes it will all just go away…
We get a very Ranka-centric episode this week, which is kind of sucky I would have liked it better had they spent more time focusing on the aftermath of Michel-kun’s death. But with so few episodes to go, I guess they don’t really have time to dwell on our beloved, downed, sniper pilot. Which is sad because they really could have put more shots of Klan out there since she was magnificent in the few scenes she she did have.
Go Go Gadget Battle Frontier.
With the President dead Leon is now the highest ranking official in the government. He puts his new position to use right away as Cathy and Ozma are unable to stop him in time and he orders the separation of the Battle Frontier from the main ship!
But you know maybe Leon should get a haircut, because its obviously taking up some space that his brain needs. Luckily the crew of the Quarter are good so they notice that bloody big heat signature at their rear, which turns out to be the Battle Frontier firing its main gun at the enemy and they manage to get out of the line of fire just in the nick of time.
I mean the help was needed but the execution was a bit poor. Just an idea Leon, but you might want to warn one of your battle ships to get the hell out of the way before firing so damned close to it! Its not like you can really afford to lose the Quarter right now!
Prepare to die Varja scum!
Michel-kun will be avenged!
The Wrath of Klan (Yes I’m aware this caption is totally lame).
Luca and Alto head over to Island 3 whilst a full sized Klan gets revenge for the death of our beloved Michel-kun by killing off any Varja in her sight. A grieving Klan is magnificent in her angry glory gunning down those responsible for the murder of her love.
Lesson one in anime stereotypes, the guy with the stupid hair is always dodgy.
Luca sends a transmission to Leon, prompting them to open a channel to the Quarter. It seems our resident shouta is finally showing some balls. Not only that, but he looks a lot more mature too, I like the new look Luca a lot better. He might actually have a chance of hooking Nanase now, if she recovers that is.
Aww Luca finally grew a pair
Back on Island 3 Luca shows Ranka and Alto the fold bomb called Little Girl. His plan is to use Ranka to lure the Varja all to Island 3, they will then separate it from the rest of the ship and detonate the bomb, killing all the Varja.
Alto of course is not down with this plan at all, especially since it involves using Ranka as bait. But fueled by his inability to protect Nanase after vowing to do so and the death of their comrade our beloved Michel-kun (sniff) Luca refuses to back down.
He points out the severity of their situation, the ship is wrecked, the ecosystem messed up and is pretty much fracked all to hell if they take another major hit. Its come down to the wire, either they will survive or the Varja will. Alto remembers that Bilrer had said something similar to him during their chat and before Alto can say anything more on the matter Ranka finally breaks her silence and says she will sing for everyone.
Hime tells Ranka he won’t let the Varja near her and that he’ll make their escape successful so she doesn’t have to worry, she can concentrate on singing. She tells him that she will and that she thinks she can do it this time, so he tells Ranka he’ll leave it up to her and he lifts off. Although he looks very unhappy about the whole thing. He’s probably just thinking about the arse kicking he’ll get from Ozma if something happens to Ranka.
Brera makes the best hankerchief
Brera appears and tells Ranka that she doesn’t have to sing if she doesn’t want to. She smiles at him sadly, telling him that he’s cruel for saying that. He holds her and lets her cry, telling her that the song is of her heart because its only hers. She stops her sniffling and tells Brera she is fine, so he lifts off to aid in protecting her.
Then why didn’t you tell him? Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh so frustrating.
Ranka looks to the sky and says as we see a shot of Alto “I wanted to tell him. Just him. But my song never reached him. That was my only desire.”
Leading the Varja to their doom
She beings to sing Aimo, calling out to the Varja. “Come Here. I’m Here. Everything goes according to plan and interestingly enough the song is heard by Sheryl as the Fold Quartz in her earring picks up Ranka’s song.
Never EVER piss off Klan
Everybody is going all out to defeat the Varja and Grace remarks that the little Queen is different from 11 years ago.
Bye bye Varja
The bomb gets set off and Ranka and the rest of the fleet escapes, she once again feels pain as lots of Varja are destroyed.
Because of course they have some other defense against the Varja…
She apologizes and Alto tells her that she did well and thanks her, though she continues to look downcast. Her melancholy feelings linger and when Leon asks her to sing during a memorial service later, she says she will no longer sing and runs away. Her outburst was seen by both Alto-hime and Sheryl as they were watching the broadcast.
Poor broken-hearted Klan, we mourn alongside you.
It just makes you think about what could have been.
Luca sits by Nanase’s bed, but by far the most heartbreaking scene was that witnessed by Alto. He stood in the hanger listening as the sobs of a heartbroken Klan rang out from within her beloved Mikhail’s Valkyrie. Sitting inside, clutching his helmet she cried and we saw that he kept a photo of them both in there. Oh the happy times they could have had if he had told her his feelings sooner. (Cries)
I hope you don’t do that in front of the kids… (Ranka and a second stagey Ai-kun).
Ranka is tired of the whole situation and is accosted by Ai-kun in the forest, he molts and goes from second stagey Varja to third stagey Vajra. Now knowing what he is, Ranka calls upon Alto-hime and they meet in Griffith Park early in the morning.
Alto asks her why she doesn’t want to sing anymore but Ranka deflects the question and asks to make paper planes with him. Whilst doing so she finally asks Hime about himself and why he wants to fly.
It could be wonderful, if you’d have enough guts to stay…
He tells her about his mother and how she was always frail so she spent a lot of time looking at the sky. While looking up with her she had said that she wanted to see a real sky, with white clouds and a blue horizon stretching forever, a real sky full of freedom. He said that for someone like him born on a ship it was like a fairytale. Ranka tells him that it was wonderful and he thanks her.
She lets her airplane go and says that everyone wants to be free and wants to live a free life. Alto somewhat agrees and when she begins to ask him something they are interrupted by Ai-kun.
Third stagey Ai-kun, paper airplane killer!
All Alto sees of course though is a Varja and so wants to destroy him. But Ranka throws herself in the way. Alto tells Ranka that as long as there are Varja they sky will be a battle ground, that to stay alive they must kill them and Brera intervenes knocking Alto-hime to the ground.
Brera asks Ranka what her desire is and tells her that he will fulfil it. She says that lately she has been remembering her past. She says its scary but there are things she should know.
I love you, so I’m leaving with Brera, because that makes sense!
So she tells Alto she is going, that at the very least she needs to take Ai-kun back to his friends. She tells Alto that she honestly wanted to go with him, she wanted to be with him always. She tells him goodbye and that she loved him and then flies off with Brera to god knows where, leaving letters behind for all her other loved ones and Alto-hime screaming for her not to go.
Michel-kun tribute shot of the week
So once again Ranka’s selfishness shines through. While on the one hand its perfectly understandable that she wants to discover her past you’d think she could wait a little while longer and make sure the fleet is okay.
I mean doesn’t she even want to know if Ozma is okay since he’s missing? Doesn’t she want to stick around until Nanase at least recovers consciousness?
She lays all her feelings on Alto and then flies away leaving him to deal with everything she laid on him all on his own. She still can’t be brave about her feelings, its easy to yell all that out when you’re leaving and you don’t have to think about the consequences.
I guess the one good thing you can say about the situation is that she’s taken herself out of the triangle so that leaves things open for Sheryl. We’ll have to see if she has the guts to actually lay her heart on the line and tell him how she feels.
But you know, if Sheryl is going to go back to singing, she’s got a lot of hard work ahead of her and so she may not have time for a relationship with Alto hime.
Next weeks episode is entitled Northern Cross so I’m sure we’ll be seeing Sheryl and Alto interaction, we’ll see how it goes I guess.
Oh and I almost forget Ranka leads out the episode this week with a new song Azure Ether, its quite beautiful.
